Magnificent Microcosm
Franklin H. Avers of Portage, Wisconsin4 made a miniature electric village, which enacts the activities of an average midwestern town from late afternoon to sunrise. This model is mounted on a 5' by 12' stage.
As the five-foot curtain opens on the scene, a breeze wafts the scent of flowers out toward the audience and flutters a flag in the park.
A motorboat passes a sailboat on the lake, an automobile drives up to a house and honks its horn, and a plane glides in and lands noisily. The sun becomes reddish and finally disappears behind the mountain. Cattle moo, cowbells jingle, the moon appears, stars twinkle.
A train pulls into the station, and all is still for a moment to signal the passing of several hours. As the day begins to break, a rooster on a fence crows, the flag is raised, a plane roars, the curtain closes, and the five-minute performance is over.
The longest poem ever penned by one man is the Shah Namah, written by the Persian poet Firdausi in the 10th century. The poem, known as "The Book of Kings," is 2,804 pages long, and its 120,000 lines fill nine good-sized volumes.
Firdausi worked on the poem for 35 years.
